The Grey, as they are called by most humans, are the Elder Race charged with humanity's guidance. While they have another name for themselves, their language is largely unknown to humans, and they do not appear to be offended by humanity's ancient 'nickname' for them.
Appearance
The Grey are exactly that -- grey in colour. They are the source of humanity's ancient legends of large-headed aliens, abducting people for persons unknown.
Interactions
The Grey discovered humanity long before humans rose to the stars, or even to their own moon. In many ways, the Grey appear to be the very image of a proper Elder Race, not interfering with a younger race's natural development. Despite that, the hints of 'ancient astronauts' in human cave drawings and religious texts point to Grey visits throughout human history. It is now known that the Greys did indeed abduct humans, typically at points in time when it appeared that humanity was at the cusp of being destroyed, either through natural disasters or threats it brought upon itself. That has brought about breeding populations of humans elsewhere in the galaxy, many of them now transformed by countless generations of divergent evolution or active genetic engineering to be entirely different species, no longer compatible with mainline humans. At least one of the other Younger Races associated with the Greys, the Ellorians, is such an off-shoot of ancient humanity.
In fact, there have been more than a few hints, although no Grey has been known as of yet to actually state it, that the Greys are entirely surprised that humanity never actually wiped itself out, having expected it to the point that they are not entirely sure what to do with humans now that they stand at the level of a star-faring Younger Race.
It is presumed that the Grey's interactions with ancient humanity are not unique, and this is borne out by the fact that they have interdicted several planets, banning Younger Races from visiting there -- presumably based on the presence of less developed races there. Whether the Grey have interfered to the same degree in the other local Younger Races is unknown, given the potential sensitivity of the topic.
Technology
Grey technology is sufficiently advanced beyond human technology -- as befits an Elder Race -- that much of it still appears as magic. While some of it works on recognizable physical laws, it does so with a power efficiency and miniaturization that human scientists can only dream of. Some suspect that Grey technology is simply built on a Technic basis, and their own species is simply advanced enough to all utilize it to some degree.
